peace
Psalm 94:19
Grace and peace be with you right now friend! Life can feel like a rollercoaster sometimes. One minute you’re cruising along, everything’s calm, and the next, BOOM—suddenly you’re hanging on for dear life as everything goes sideways. Whether it’s your career, relationships, or just figuring out your purpose, uncertainty is like that unwanted guest who crashes the party. And when spiritual anxiety creeps in, it can feel like everything is shaking beneath you.
But here’s the thing—we can trust God even in these crazy, uncertain moments. It’s not about having it all together or pretending like we aren’t struggling, but about finding peace in the middle of it. Let’s dive into how we can navigate spiritual anxiety and truly trust God when everything feels uncertain.
what is spiritual anxiety?
Spiritual anxiety is that nagging fear that creeps up when you start to question if things will really turn out okay. It’s when your mind spins with “what ifs” like, “What if God isn’t hearing me?” or “What if I’m on the wrong path?” It’s that inner turmoil of wondering if God is really in control when life feels out of control.
Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but the Bible shows us we’re not alone in feeling this way. Look at the Psalms—David, a man after God’s own heart, experienced deep anxiety and often cried out to God. Psalm 94:19 says, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Even the most faithful struggle sometimes, and that’s okay.
acknowledge the fear, but don't let it rule
Anxiety thrives when we ignore it. Trying to suppress fear or pretending it doesn’t exist only gives it more power over us. So, first things first—acknowledge the anxiety. Don’t be ashamed of it. Take a deep breath and name it. Tell God exactly what you're feeling. The Bible reminds us, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). You don’t have to carry it alone.
Talk to God as honestly as you would a best friend. “God, I’m scared. I don’t see what’s ahead, and it’s making me nervous.” Just putting those feelings out there opens the door for God’s peace to come in.
release control (easier said than done)
Here’s the hard truth—anxiety often comes from our need to control everything. We want all the answers right now. We want to map out the future perfectly so nothing surprises us. But faith means letting go and trusting that God sees the big picture, even when we don’t.
Proverbs 3:5-6 hits this right on the head: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Trust is letting go of the idea that we’re supposed to have all the answers, and instead, leaning into God’s timing and His purpose for us.
That doesn't mean it’s easy—it takes courage to surrender control. But every time you feel the anxiety bubbling up, it’s an opportunity to practice saying, "God, I’m trusting You with this."
God's faithfulness
One powerful way to combat spiritual anxiety is to look back at God’s faithfulness in your life. Remember the times He showed up, the moments you thought you couldn’t make it, but somehow, you did.
In the Old Testament, God often told the Israelites to remember the miracles He performed for them as a way to strengthen their faith. When fear and uncertainty clouded their vision, recalling His past faithfulness helped them move forward with trust. We can do the same. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by the unknown, take a moment to reflect on how God has carried you through other seasons. If He did it before, He’ll do it again.
pray, but also listen
It’s easy to go to God with a laundry list of requests and prayers, especially when anxiety takes over. But don’t forget to listen. Sometimes, peace comes not just from pouring out our hearts to God, but from being still in His presence and letting Him speak to us.
Philippians 4:6-7 gives us this incredible promise: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” God’s peace can fill the space where anxiety once lived, but we have to be still long enough to receive it.
community is key
You’re not supposed to go through this alone. Sometimes, the weight of spiritual anxiety can feel too heavy to bear, and that’s when community becomes so important. Reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, or small group leader. Share what you’re going through. There’s power in having someone pray with you, speak truth over you, and remind you that you’re not alone in the battle.
The Bible tells us that "iron sharpens iron" (Proverbs 27:17), and that we’re called to bear one another’s burdens. Don’t isolate yourself—let others in, and allow them to encourage you when it feels hard to trust.
worship your way through
This might seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to combat anxiety is through worship. Worship shifts our focus off the storm and onto the One who controls it. It reminds us that even when life feels chaotic, God is still in control. Worshiping through the uncertainty is a bold declaration of faith that says, “God, You’re bigger than this.”
When you don’t know what to pray, turn on some worship music and let the lyrics speak for you. Songs like “It Is Well” or “Way Maker” can lift your heart and fill your spirit with hope.
faith over fear
Anxiety doesn’t disqualify you from trusting God. In fact, your willingness to turn to Him in the middle of the anxiety is a testament to your faith. The truth is, life will always have its share of uncertainty, but we have a solid foundation in Christ. No matter what storm you’re facing, God’s love remains unshaken.
So, the next time you feel the weight of spiritual anxiety, remember this: Trust isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about knowing the One who does.
Trust God. He’s got you.
